America’s highway network was created in the 1950’s, kicking off decades of long-lasting service by concrete pavements. However, one unforeseen structural issue arose that needed to be addressed: due to a lack of effective load transfer between concrete slabs, faulting occurred. A cost-effective solution in the form of dowel bar retrofit – a pavement preservation technique still in use today – was developed.
